Medical Equipment Stewardship

Stage: Active

Campaign: Patients and Families

In the past few years we have purchased medical equipment that was NEVER used. Or equipment that was out of warranty before it was put into service. Three of the more recent purchases were a Welch Allyn patient monitor – purchased but never used. Defibrillators purchased from a vendor then switched vendors two years later. Feeding pumps purchased but not put into service until after their original warranty ran out. ...more »

Patient Concierge Services

Stage: Active

Campaign: Patients and Families

It would be nice to have a single point of contact for parents to call when needing to schedule appointments for all of our outside offices, specialists, and on-site clinics. Concierge Scheduling could help make arranging a family's visit easier. They could provide driving directions, parking information, etc., during the phone call in hopes of helping to alleviate the stress of getting here. Scheduling Coordinators ...more »

Stage: Active

Campaign: Quality and Safety

The Institute of Medicine calls for American health care to be organized as a learning health care system "in which knowledge generation is so embedded into the core of the practice of medicine that it is a normal outgrowth and product of the health care delivery process and leads to continual improvement in care." Furthermore, securing just health care requires a constantly updated body of evidence about the effectiveness ...more »

Quiet/Nap Rooms for Employees

Stage: Active

Campaign: Institutional Culture

Quiet rooms that are dimly lit with lounging future where employees may enjoy a 15-20 minute break to rest and recharge during the afternoon or second half of shift for night shift employees. Studies show a short "power nap" energizes an individual and increases productivity which in turn will lead to better care for patients and a healthier financial bottom line.

Outpatient services satellites

Stage: Active

Campaign: Clinical Enterprise

Taking the specialty clinics and therapy services we provide in Knoxville to surrounding communities in other counties where they are needed. For example, I know from personal experience that Sevier County has no provider of Pediatric Occupational or Physical Therapy. I have seen this successfully implemented at another Pediatric facility by using rental space to bring specialties to outlying communities one day a week, ...more »

Partnership in 3rd world/impoverished country

Stage: Active

Campaign: Community Involvement / Stakeholder Perceptions

Would like to see ETCH or the Tennessee Children's hospitals together (TC Thompson, Vandy, LeBonheur, ETCH) to partner with/establish a quality Children's Hospital in sister country/city. Opportunities abound for this service. Infusion of a small amount capital and quality medical care with the partnership of national health care providers could greatly improve the health of children in impoverished countries. This ...more »

Walking through our campus

Stage: Active

Campaign: Patients and Families

All walking directions from the ER, MOB and street parking areas, need to be consistant. All levels of all buildings should be consistantly named. Example, the bridge across the MOB to the Hospital should NOT be Floor # One on one side of the bridge and Floor# Two on the other. The walkways between the covered parking garages needed to be made "ramps" to accomodate those in wheelchairs and walkers. The signage should ...more »

Dining Rooms

Stage: Active

Campaign: Patients and Families

I would like to see separate dining areas for employees and families. I have overheard several conversations in the dining room that would be inappropriate for families to hear. Also, lunch gives us time to discuss our day with co-workers, again, conversations that do not need to be overheard by families.

Growth in outpatient services

Stage: Active

Campaign: Strategic Partnerships

Outpatient services will have the highest revenue growth with the new healthcare program. We already have one of the highest ED visit, lab visit, and radiology visits for the limited space we have on the downtown campus. Contracting with pre-existing services (like we do with UT) to have ED staff, radiology staff and lab services in a children's hospital annex at other ER's will take some of the pressure off the downtown ...more »
